How to Judge a Cigar

What to bear in mind when assessing a cigar

The Construction:
Is it well constructed! Gently, but firmly, feel the cigar from one end to the other. Is it of a consistent texture, no overly firm or soft spots. Too firm or too soft and it will draw badly.

The Condition:
Cigars need to be conditioned before smoking, they need to be aged for at least a few months, up to several years, at the correct humidity (70% RH) and at the correct temperature (70 deg F or 21 deg C). A dry cigar will burn hot, quickly and probably with a harsh taste. A damp cigaris difficult to light and probably be hard to draw.

Your Opinion (what really matters!)
How does it taste to you? What effect does it have on you? How does the cigar develop in flavour and nuances upon the palate, or does the taste remain the same throughout? Your enjoyment is what matters, does the experience relax and fulfill you?

An interesting excerpt from the Puro Express IPhone App. Havana Sensation is set at 72% humidity and 72 Degrees because of consistent humidity and temperature change as a result of doors opening. Every cigar shop runs a little higher to compensate for this. This judge does not work at HS so don't worry!!
